On a similar line to Tomer, my ISP has Firefox on their download mirror site http://mirror.internode.on.net/ (which means it doesn't count towards my download quota).

It would be great if Firefox could prefer that mirror. It then be would be faster and cheaper for us.

As someone already mentioned, and as I'm sure someone always mentions, we could leverage bittorrent. This already exists as bug 236755. Obviously we'd let the user choose whether to do a straight download vs torrent and what options to seed that torrent with. The torrent could auto-stop after 48 hours, for example. It doesn't have to be a full-blown bittorrent client. It just needs to handle the mozilla parts.

Thanks to your post, I guess you'll get some more mirror servers in few days. ;-)

Hmm...

...

BitTorrent!

What if every Firefox browser was a BitTorrent client that seeded the latest update it was aware of, using peer exchange, at a very low upstream speed?

And what if every Firefox browser requested updates by BitTorrent?

Not currently. We hope to have it doing so in the near future (probably sometime this summer).

I'm just wondering - Does the redirection script support serving files from a location close to the user?

Our international inbound/outbount Internet access is recently become limited by the ISPs, but access to a nearby server might be faster. I don't think it would be helpful for other countries, but will give better download speeds for local users.
