{"id":111,"date":"2008-08-25T20:50:40","date_gmt":"2008-08-26T00:50:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.justdave.net\/dave\/?p=111"},"modified":"2008-08-25T20:53:46","modified_gmt":"2008-08-26T00:53:46","slug":"bugzilla-10-years-ago-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.justdave.net\/dave\/2008\/08\/25\/bugzilla-10-years-ago-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Bugzilla: 10 years ago today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On April 7, 1998, Terry Weissman <a title=\"Announcing Bugzilla -- the mozilla.org bugtracking system.\" href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/netscape.public.mozilla.general\/browse_frm\/thread\/32fa6060908878d6\/79f9797cf5226cf7?lnk=st&amp;q=#79f9797cf5226cf7\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> the creation of bugzilla.mozilla.org, a new bug tracking system for keeping track of bugs in the Mozilla code base.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"fixed_width\" style=\"font-family: Courier,Monospaced;\">Bugzilla is here. \u00c2\u00a0She&#8217;s very young, and fragile. \u00c2\u00a0But if you treat her kindly, she&#8217;ll remember your bug reports for you. \u00c2\u00a0When she grows up a little, she&#8217;ll become invaluable in helping track what is actually being done to the codebase. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On April 15th, a mere 8 days later, the first person <a title=\"How to get Bugzilla?\" href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/netscape.public.mozilla.general\/browse_frm\/thread\/30264512ddab134f\/48a2a3e8ad6d9b89?lnk=st&amp;q=#48a2a3e8ad6d9b89\" target=\"_blank\">requested the source code<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"fixed_width\" style=\"font-family: Courier,Monospaced;\">I like bugzilla! \u00c2\u00a0Its cool! \u00c2\u00a0If I wanted to use it for my own (non-Mozilla) project, how can I go about getting a copy?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But alas, it was still a proprietary Netscape product at the time.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, we learn from Terry in that thread:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"fixed_width\" style=\"font-family: Courier,Monospaced;\">you need to be aware that it is built on top of the Kiva application server stuff, and on top of a database (I think it&#8217;s an Oracle database). Neither of these things are free.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow. Not only were they not free, they were expensive.\u00c2\u00a0 Kiva cost about $35,000 at the time, and Oracle&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 if you had to ask, it was too much. :)\u00c2\u00a0 Not only that, but:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"fixed_width\" style=\"font-family: Courier,Monospaced;\">first we&#8217;d have to convince the folks here at Netscape who wrote it (not me) that this is something they want to do. \u00c2\u00a0That might to be doable, but it hasn&#8217;t been attempted yet. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s always possible that someone at Netscape has plans to make money off of selling that code.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But that request apparently bore fruit.\u00c2\u00a0 On August 26, 1998, with <a title=\"New version of &quot;Bugzilla&quot; (the mozilla.org bugsystem) -- with source!\" href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/netscape.public.mozilla.announce\/msg\/f10c0f781841f10d\" target=\"_blank\">this post<\/a>, Terry Weissman announced that a new completely rewritten version of Bugzilla had been deployed on bugzilla.mozilla.org.\u00c2\u00a0 What&#8217;s more, this new version included the source code being available for download, and it ran under Apache using MySQL for the database.<\/p>\n<p>The first checkin to CVS was at 11:15pm PDT, August 25, 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Happy 10th anniversary to the open source Bugzilla Project!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On April 7, 1998, Terry Weissman announced the creation of bugzilla.mozilla.org, a new bug tracking system for keeping track of bugs in the Mozilla code base.
